Farming Project "From Farm to Plate"
Farming Project "From Farm to Plate".

His career is distinguished by an uncommon combination of hands-on engineering expertise and strategic operational leadership. Beginning in industrial maintenance and progressing to become World Class Manufacturing/Lean Facilitator and Coordinator at Grace Food Processors (Canning), Desmond developed an in-depth understanding of manufacturing from the production floor to the management level.
He became one of the key individuals selected to help lead Grace Food Processors’ transition to World Class Manufacturing. What began as an initial six-month improvement initiative evolved into approximately eleven years of continuous improvement leadership, during which he helped embed Lean principles, workplace organization, productivity improvement and culture change across the operation.
Desmond’s expertise spans 5S and 6S, Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Kaizen, Kanban, Value Stream Mapping, Set-up Reduction, 5-Why Analysis, preventive maintenance, factory organization, equipment reliability and workforce training. His Lean/WCM implementation experience has extended across several organizations, including Grace Food Processors Canning, Grace Food Processors Meats, Dairy Industries, National Processors, Rapid True Value, Grace Agro Processors Hounslow, GraceKennedy Head Office, IGL and ATL.
A results-oriented practitioner, Desmond has contributed to significant operational improvements. His documented achievements include helping increase Tropical Rhythms production from approximately 2,500 cases per shift to about 8,000 cases across two shifts, while contributing to reductions in finished-goods variances to approximately $2,000 and raw-material variances from more than $3 million to approximately $30,000.
His technical expertise is equally extensive. Desmond has trained production operators in the operation, repair and maintenance of seamers, labellers, pumps, motors and conveyor systems. He also participated in the international sourcing and subsequent installation of a Busse production system, trained employees in its operation, and supported equipment modifications associated with Grace Canning’s Ready Meal project.
Desmond holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Technology, Jamaica, with studies in Production and Operations Management and Human Resource Management. His professional development includes Mechanical Maintenance Technology, Mechanical Engineering Craft Studies, Welding Craft Practice, Train-the-Trainer certification, ISO 22000 auditing, GMP, HACCP, Canning Technology, Seamer Maintenance and international training in World Class Manufacturing and Lean implementation.
He has also shared his knowledge in academia, serving as a part-time lecturer at the University of Technology, Jamaica and contributing to the delivery of World Class Manufacturing and Lean concepts.
Desmond is deeply committed to transferring practical manufacturing knowledge to the next generation of technicians, operators, supervisors and entrepreneurs. His own progression from technical trainee to maintenance specialist, Lean leader, lecturer and consultant gives him a particularly strong appreciation for the power of technical education, mentorship and continuous learning.
He believes that World Class Manufacturing should not be viewed as a concept reserved for large corporations. His mission is to help businesses of all sizes adopt practical Lean principles that reduce waste, strengthen productivity, develop employees and improve competitiveness.
Desmond’s vision is to contribute to a stronger and more competitive manufacturing sector in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean, where operational excellence, technical competence, equipment reliability and continuous improvement become embedded in everyday business practice.
Through consultancy, training and mentorship, he remains committed to helping organizations develop their people, improve their processes, reduce waste and build sustainable world-class operations.
His career is a testament to the value of practical expertise, persistence and lifelong learning—and to the transformative impact that one committed change leader can have on people, processes and organizations.
